 Moscow metropolitan, which was opened on May 15, 1935 is the main public transport of the capital connecting the central part of the city with industrial and residential areas. At present Moscow metro carries 57% of the whole number of passengers.


 Radial-circle structure of metro corresponds to the historically established layout of Moscow. It branches out from the centre to the outskirts providing the most reliable and rapid transportation. The average length of the trip is 13 kms. About 7,1 million people travel by metro every day and this figure increases up to 9 millions on week days. It’s the world’s highest figure.

 The metro consists of 12 lines with the total length of 282,5 kms., its 173 stations serve almost 10 thousand trains. The rolling stock of 4,5 thousand cars forms over 500 trains.

 It is only metro that can provide quick transportation of a big number of passengers from one part of Moscow to another. Average daily number of passengers amounts to 50 thousand people. The most loaded lines at present are: Vykhino, Yugo-Zapadnaya, Novogireevo, VDNKH, Kuzminki, Rechnoy Vokzal, Tushinskaya, Shchelkovskaya and Kitay-Gorod – they serve 100-150 thousand passengers daily.

 Average Moscow metro train speed is 41,57 km/h. At the same time regular train operation with the minimal headway of 90 seconds is provided.

 Moscow metro is the world’s leader in the volume of traffic and reliable transportation and it occupies one of the leading places in other performance indicators.
